Virtual Career Development Resources

Personal Branding

During this time of increasing virtual engagement, it is important to have a professional online presence. Check out  LinkedIn for Students  and these guides to utilizing the platform:

Online Certifications

We encourage you to explore online certifications as professional development in lieu of conferences/conventions.    You can do these at your own pace and use them to strengthen your resume. See below for a few sites to explore for general skills and certifications specific to your field of interest.

Info Sessions & Career Fairs

Employers are now hosting information sessions, recruiting events, and career fairs online. These virtual events offer greater accessibility to connect with companies that you previously may not have been able to consider. To view virtual events that employers have shared with IWU, visit  Handshake's events page. You may also want to explore  Handshake's career fair page to utilize the new virtual fair tool for employers and graduate/professional schools.

The Job Market

While this is an uncertain time with the economy, employers are hiring. The hiring process and the opportunities available have shifted, but companies are still posting on Handshake and other sites.  Activate or login to Handshake by using your IWU netID and password.

On Handshake, employers connect with IWU to share postings for our students and alumni to see. You can apply for jobs directly through our Handshake posting database or via the external links the postings will direct you to.

Virtual/Phone Interviews

How can you prepare for a digital or phone interview?

You can use our online resource,  Big Interview, to record yourself answering industry specific questions. You can create a free account. We also have interview resources in our Handshake resource library  here. A Hart Career Center staff would also be happy to take you through a practice phone or virtual interview (schedule an appointment).

Remote Work

A remote position provides the chance to gain career relevant experience with an organization where on-site work is limited or not required. This experience can take multiple forms including, but not limited to, remote internships, project based experiences also called micro-internships, gig work, etc. These remote experiences are great opportunities to gain valuable work experience, explore career interests, and further develop skills that can be useful in your career.

Finding and securing a remote experience in a number of ways mirrors the normal job search process. Of course, these are not normal times and being able to find some of these remote experiences may involve searching in other than popular job sites. Here are some tips to keep in mind when searching for opportunities:

  • Keep your resume updated
  • Create and complete profiles on the sites that you are applying to (like Handshake or LinkedIn)
  • Look at the experiences you are applying to and evaluate the benefits
  • Not every experience is equal, so check carefully
  • Be prepared for virtual interviewing to secure the position (practice virtual interviewing)

Refer to the resources below to look for a remote position:
